About

Thank you for taking the time to explore the 1873 Studios website!

Here, you’ll find more information about our mission and services, and how we aim to make a lasting impact in the world of art and storytelling.

At 1873 Studios, we believe in the freedom to exist and to create. This freedom is at the core of everything we do, and it drives our mission to craft something beautiful and lasting—something that will inspire future generations. Above all, we are dedicated to storytelling, bringing voices and visions to life in authentic, meaningful ways.

We offer a range of services designed to support both emerging and established voices in the art and commercial world. Our consultancy services are aimed at helping organisations and individuals diversify the artists they work with, the art they showcase, and their approach to navigating the art industry—especially for those who identify with the Global Majority. We emphasise the critical role of art in expanding cultural narratives and fostering inclusivity.

Our award-winning curatorial services are dedicated to diversifying the art industry by seamlessly blending design and curatorial projects. We manage the entire process—from the initial conception of an idea to its completion in a gallery space—ensuring that every exhibition reaches its full potential. Our goal is to provide access to a balanced and healthy narrative of our cross-cultural society, fostering joy and essential dialogue. At the heart of our curatorial approach is the belief in storytelling in its most authentic and compelling form. By encouraging curiosity, we invite audiences into a holistic, immersive experience that elevates both the art and the conversation around it.

For over 20 years, our photography services have helped businesses enhance their brand awareness and cultivate stronger customer relationships. We’ve worked with models and fashion editors, capturing timeless images in the commercial industry, while also creating memorable, impactful photography for private clients. Through our work, we aim to create visuals that leave a lasting impression and resonate deeply with both brands and individuals.

1873 Studios was founded by Dominique Nok, a storyteller whose journey began in the world of Journalism. While studying Journalism, Dominique discovered photography and began to “write with light.” This discovery turned into a powerful way for her to communicate her own stories, as well as those of others. In 2021, Dominique earned her master’s degree in curating and has since curated numerous exhibitions, ranging from solo shows to group projects.

Throughout her career, Dominique noticed the lack of recognition for Black female photographers, particularly in the commercial and art sectors. This realisation fuelled her passion for contributing to the ongoing conversation about equal representation in the global photography industry. She continues to create platforms for talented visual artists, particularly those from the African diaspora, as well as from Black, Asian, and Global Majority communities.
